May 27, 2016  Can MacPro upgrade OS from 10.5.8 to 10.6 or later? I know this is thread is for Notebooks but I can't find the same topic in Desktops and there is bit of a time issue. Quad core Mac Pro and Macbooks updated using combo without any problems (backed up first) -- all seemed to take quite a while at that '2 minutes remaining' point.

The dual 2.0 GHz G5 took even longer at that point, but finished okay.

The older G4 server in the closet, 'Only' a 1.2 GHz machine, took quite a while to complete the update. It asked permission to reboot and install updates, sure go ahead, and it started shutting down..

That was last night -- it was still doing something trying to shut down this morning, so I restarted it. The apple came up, and it restarted twice on its own, and is now happy again, saying it has 10.5.8.

And as others have reported, Spotlight is gleefully rummaging everything again, slowing things down.

I'd really like the ability to tell the system not to start up Spotlight until the system has been up and running for ten minutes or so! That would at least let me see if things are working before Spotlight brings the system to its knees!
