In the Mail app on your Mac, do one of the following:
Take all accounts online: Click the lightning bolt icon or choose Mailbox > Take All Accounts Online.
Take a specific account online (if you have more than one account): Click the lightning bolt icon next to the account’s mailbox, or choose Mailbox > Online Status > Take [account] Online.

Microsoft Outlook is a useful tool for sending and receiving email, but it can be frustrating if the tool is frequently reporting that it's offline. Outlook versions from at least Outlook 2013 work online or offline for some tasks like drafting emails, but the program does need to connect to send and receive emails.
Tip
If Microsoft Outlook always starts online, check that your Internet connection is reliable. Also make sure that your server settings are correct, checking with your employer or Internet provider if necessary.
If Outlook Keeps Going Offline

Ordinarily, Microsoft Outlook is designed to go into an online mode where you can send and receive mail if you're online. If you're not connected to the Internet, you can still use the program to review email you've already received or draft emails to be sent when you do connect. You can click the Work Offline toggle button in Outlook's Send/Receive tab to toggle between offline mode and online mode, assuming you're online.
If Outlook 2016 keeps opening in offline mode or the program periodically goes online unexpectedly, there may be a problem with your Internet connection. Check to see if you can access websites normally. If you have a way to access your email account through the Web, you can try this as well to see if it's an issue with your email provider. If your connection seems slow or disconnected, try reconnecting network cables or restarting your Wi-Fi connection. Move closer to the wireless router if you have one and are able to do so, and consider contacting your Internet provider or, if you're at work, your employer for help.
Fixing Outlook
If your Internet connection doesn't seem to be the issue, there may be something you can fix in your Outlook settings or Outlook itself. Check to make sure you're running the latest updated version of Outlook by going to the File menu and clicking Office Account. Under Product Information click Update Options, then the Update Now button.
If that doesn't help, and you consistently can't get online, you may need to adjust your mail server settings. Check with whoever provided your email account settings, whether it's your internet service provider or your employer, to see if something has changed since you configured your account or if your password needs to be reset. You can also try deleting and recreating your email profile. Make sure you have your email address, password and server settings handy before you do this. To do this, right click your account name in Outlook's Folder pane and click the Remove button. Then go to the File tab and click Add Account, filling out the form with your account information.
